چکیده

Twenty rats were each immunized intraperitoneally with 1.25 X 10(7) formalin-fixed Trypanosoma brucei brucei (Stock EATRO 1969) derived from tsetse salivary glands and propagated in culture at 29 degrees C in their infective form for more than 1000 days. Another group, consisting of 10 rats, was similarly immunized with parasites of stock EATRO 999 derived from salivary glands of a tsetse fly and propagated in culture for more than 360 days. Immunized animals were resistant to homologous challenge with 10(4) cultured infective parasites. There was no cross protection between stocks and animals were susceptible to homologous infective tsetse bite challenge.

More than meets the eye: understanding Trypanosoma brucei morphology in the tsetse

T. brucei, the causative parasite for African trypanosomiasis, faces an interesting dilemma in its life cycle. It has to successfully complete its infection cycle in the tsetse vector to be able to infect other vertebrate hosts. T. brucei has to undergo multiple morphological changes as it invades the alimentary canal of the tsetse to finally achieve infectivity in the salivary glands. In this ...

Defence reactions of Glossina morsitans morsitans against different species of bacteria and Trypanosoma brucei brucei.

Tsetse flies, Glossina morsitans morsitans, fed on rats infected with Trypanosoma brucei brucei showed wide fluctuations in total and differential haemocyte counts. Similar fluctuations occurred in controls fed on non-infected rats and also between the two groups without showing any difference which could be attributed to the infection. Trypanosome infection of the tsetse haemocoel occurred in ...

Infectivity reacquisition by Trypanosoma brucei brucei cultivated with tsetse salivary glands.

Reacquisition of infectivity four mice was observed in cultures of Trypanosoma brucei brucei grown in the presence of tests fly salivary gland explants in a medium based on the amino acid composition of Glossina hemolymph and containing fetal bovine serum. High infection rates were obtained in mice inoculated with about 1.5 X 10(8) organisms. Infectivity reacquisition was correlated with invasi...

Maturation of a Trypanosoma brucei infection to the infectious metacyclic stage is enhanced in nutritionally stressed tsetse flies.

We report on the effect of tsetse fly starvation on the maturation of an established Trypanosoma brucei brucei midgut infection, i.e., the development of procyclic infection into the infectious metacyclic parasites in the tsetse fly salivary glands. Glossina morsitans morsitans flies were nutritionally stressed 10 d after the uptake of a T. b. brucei-infected bloodmeal by depriving these flies ...

Factors Affecting Trypanosome Maturation in Tsetse Flies

Trypanosoma brucei brucei infections which establish successfully in the tsetse fly midgut may subsequently mature into mammalian infective trypanosomes in the salivary glands. This maturation is not automatic and the control of these events is complex. Utilising direct in vivo feeding experiments, we report maturation of T. b. brucei infections in tsetse is regulated by antioxidants as well as...
